Support for multiple players – which has become part of the game’s core appeal – was added only when the character control scheme was implemented, to make a scene for testing and prototyping the key fight mechanics. Think: Capcom's Final Fight, Sega's Streets of Rage and Golden Axe, Konami's Crime Fighters and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Taito's Double Dragon and Renegade. The initial test scene was informed by arcade melee fighting games from the late 1980s and early 1990s. “From these prototypes, we decided upon the urban crime idiom: the key mechanics were significantly less complex to implement, and the rectilinear geometry of the built environment could be approximated and optimized with modular structures,” says Boneloaf’s James Brown. The team prototyped a number of games referencing clichéd scenarios from genre films, high fantasy games, space operas and urban crime thrillers. There aren't any real-life features in the game, but it's fun to watch and play.As is often the case, the roots of Gang Beasts grew from self-imposed limitation. They look like colorful bubbles with a head and limbs. There are physics controls that give you just enough of an effort to get up but will keep you from getting to that point because of the force that the hazard has over yourself and others. This is where Gang Beasts gets funny as you see the ways that the opponent reacts to being thrown into something unexpected instead of fighting with the hands or a knife. You can fight with your hands and a few weapons, but the goal is to toss the opponent into environmental hazards that come across, such as a toxic waste spill.

Find someone who is of the similar skill set as you when you're playing because you don't want an unfair advantage on either side. You can talk to the people you're playing with during the match. Another option is to play with others who are online. You can play against the computer, which isn't recommended until you get some experience in playing and how to perform some of the actions. All you have to do is defeat the opponent.

When you play the game, you'll likely laugh more than anything at the characters. Gang Beasts might sound like a game that features intense fighting, but it's really a comical game at times that includes colorful characters and fun action.
